Looking Left and Right: Pointless Abstractions

Today’s sharply polarized and strategically focused political parties fit poorly with a constitutional system that anticipates collaboration as well as competition within and across separated institutions. As we initially wrote, parliamentary-style parties in a separation-of-powers government are a formula for willful obstruction and policy irresolution. The continuation of divided party government and the promiscuous use of the filibuster after the 2012 election have largely frustrated the policy direction affirmed by majority electorates and supported in polls of voters taken since the election.

Electing Trump: What Happens Then? Pt 3

There are tens of millions of Americans who, although personally lacking the self-confidence, ambition and leadership qualities of authoritarian dominators like [Newt] Gingrich or Sarah Palin, nevertheless empower the latter to achieve their goals while finding psychological fulfillment in subordination to a cause. [Robert] Altemeyer describes these persons as authoritarian followers. They are socially rigid, highly conventional and strongly intolerant personalities, who, absent any self-directed goals, seek achievement and satisfaction by losing themselves in a movement greater than themselves. One finds them overrepresented in reactionary political movements, fundamentalist sects and leader cults like scientology…. Probably about 20 to 25 percent of the adult American population is so right-wing authoritarian, so scared, so self-righteous, so ill-informed and so dogmatic that nothing you can say or do will change their minds. [citing Altemeyer] They would march America into a dictatorship and probably feel that things had improved as a result…. And they are so submissive to their leaders that they will believe and do virtually anything they are told. They are not going to let up and they are not going away.

Life Will Answer – The Book: A Better Path? Pt 1

You must be fearless enough to drop what you think you know about God – Neale Donald Walsch *

As I state in my book Life Will Answer, the observations I’m offering are nothing more than suggestions to consider the possibility that perhaps Life and God/Allah/Whatever might be more than what we’ve chosen so far. Then, decide if that makes sense and if this possibility can be used to your advantage from this moment on.

Specifically, [the need for closure] fosters the tendency to seize on information that affords closure and to freeze on closure once it has been attained. The need for closure, whether varied situationally or measured dispositionally, has been associated with tendencies to engage in social stereotyping … to resist persuasive influence … and to reject opinion deviates. *

Life Will Answer – The Book: When Is Enough, Enough? Pt 2

As I witness more discord in this nation—the vicious and judgmental condemnation by some; the ignorance; the greed; the willingness of so many in positions of authority to misrepresent, deceive, and lie for selfish gain at the expense of so many others who in good faith rely on that very ‘leadership’; and the choice by some to deliberately turn fact into mere questionable opinion (risking the well-being of countless millions in doing so), I became more and more convinced that we all need to take a moment to catch our collective breaths and figure out where we’re all going and just what the hell we’re doing.

Looking Left and Right: The Fear Of Change Pt 2

The history of the world is simply the chronicle of what has happened because of the deeds of a small number of ordinary people who had extraordinary levels of commitment to making a difference. These individuals did little things extraordinarily well. They decided that something must change, that they must be the ones to do it, and that they could do it—and then they summoned the courage to persist until they found a way to make it work. – Tony Robbins

Looking Left and Right: A Better Future? Pt 1

The moral difference is clear: Do we have both personal and social responsibility, or just personal responsibility? Are we in this together, or are we on our own? The conservatives say we are, and should be, on our own. Are we the United States or the Separate States — or millions of isolated individuals who don’t care about anybody else?
The answer to these questions affects every issue.

Life Will Answer – The Book: Why Would Any “God” Be Narrow-Minded?

I recently published an eBook entitled Life Will Answer. It’s an exploration of life, religion, and the tenuous connection one has with the other—at least as has been defined to date by the various theologies of past and present-day believers.  Continue reading
