My observation—borne out in my own life as well—is that most people give up at the thought of even trying to figure anything out about how Life works. We tend to pick a path and hope for the best, understandably focusing on our own narrow range of interests, expertise, and experiences. There’s nothing wrong with that. But this approach narrows the scope of contributions offered and opportunities available.

The biggest fallacy in our modern political discourse is this belief that because one believes in God, one has to involve God’s wishes in your decision-making. The problem with that … is no one actually knows what God is thinking and so they are simply asserting what they believe and assuming God is along for the ride.

[R]eligious fundamentalists … are highly likely to be authoritarian followers. They are highly submissive to established authority, aggressive in the name of that authority, and conventional to the point of insisting everyone should behave as their authorities decide. They are fearful and self-righteous and have a lot of hostility in them that they readily direct toward various out-groups. They are easily incited, easily led, rather un-inclined to think for themselves, largely impervious to facts and reason, and rely instead on social support to maintain their beliefs. They bring strong loyalty to their in-groups, have thick-walled, highly compartmentalized minds, use a lot of double standards in their judgments, are surprisingly unprincipled at times, and are often hypocrites.
But they are also Teflon-coated when it comes to guilt. They are blind to themselves, ethnocentric and prejudiced, and as closed-minded as they are narrow- minded. They can be woefully uninformed about things they oppose, but they prefer ignorance and want to make others become as ignorant as they. Humanity cannot continue to resolve twenty-first-century dilemmas with first-century guidelines—much less guidelines that came before that time….
Tomorrow’s moral, ethical, and social challenges cannot be met using eighteenth- or tenth- or sixth-century understandings and instructions. Those instructions and those understandings were not ‘wrong,’ they were not ‘bad,’ they were simply incomplete.
Yet unless you acknowledge this, unless humanity can admit that it does not know all there is to know about God and about Life, there can be no hope of continuing life as you have known it on your planet a great deal longer. [1]
