Life Will Answer Quote of Note # 44 (R. May)

An observation worth noting … and pondering, from Rollo May :

The relationship between commitment and doubt is by no means an antagonistic one. Commitment is healthiest when it is not without doubt but in spite of doubt.

Doubt is a companion on almost every journey of significance in every person’s life. The greater the objective sought or purpose to be fulfilled, the more we can expect hesitation and uncertainty to play a role.

The unknown inherently carries doubt. How can we know with absolute, total conviction that what we seek we will find? For all our confidence and commitment to a pursuit, can we really be sure that some unexpected obstacle won’t jump in front of us, and most likely at the worst possible time, and ultimately prevent us from succeeding?

No, we can’t.

Welcome to life, with all of its craziness and chance happenings and random changes in direction, and obstacles and setbacks and fears and worries and all the rest. Achievement is a process. Success is determined by our efforts, our focus, our belief in what we are doing, and a commitment to carry through no matter what until we reach our goal.

Our own history, and those of every other person, are filled with instances when we simply could not bring ourselves to take one more step. Why is different for each of us, and the reasons range from perfectly valid to wildly unreasonable. It doesn’t matter.

Commitment will matter most, and will lead us to achieve whatever goal we seek, when we take one more step despite the doubt and all the reasons not to proceed. That’s when we know we are truly committed, and that’s when Life Will Answer
