Electing Trump: What Happens Then? Pt 7

What happens when Trump supporters realize how completely clueless the man is about … everything the President of the United States should know and/or understand? What will life be like for them when they realize their rabid support offers no shield against the incalculable damage a Trump Presidency would rain down on all of us—here and abroad? If one is making up facts or ratcheting up the levels of destructive and mindless hostilities to justify positions taken or policies offered, it is not difficult to contemplate the terrible outcomes when governing is actually required.

There will be no turning away from the inevitable revelation: Trump’s bottomless pit of bluster, hate, and governing ignorance is the sum total of all he has to offer to the American public and world community. That’s what we all have to look forward to?

Trump’s candidacy and the level of enthusiastic support for it should eliminate any doubt that the observation offered by Princeton University’s Larry M. Bartels in the first post of this series was—while unkind, to be sure—an accurate one. How sad for all of us! How deeply disturbing as well….That so many educated and knowledgeable voters have bought into his ugliness makes it so much worse.

Having entered the Age of Ignorance we will not escape its tenacious grasp after this year’s election. Dishonorably executed, intentional misrepresentation of facts, coupled with the naïve replication of those statements by the gullible, will continue to proliferate. The question becomes how deeply we will allow ourselves to fall into the Intellectual Dark Ages? Will those well-educated and cognizant of the trap be sufficiently influential to overcome the seductive morass of emotionally pleasing tripe, nonsense and willful ignorance? Today the answer eludes us.

What kind of a nation do we choose to be? What do we leave behind for our children?

An exceptional nation must be better than what’s currently being demonstrated by “leaders”, the media, and yes, citizens also. How many are willing to step forward?

We have choices. Acting on them rather than defaulting to more of the same, however, is a different issue. Blind adherence to group-think has many benefits … and some serious disadvantages. Promoting more conflict creates more conflict … not exactly rocket science.

What happens in light of our actions and beliefs ought to start mattering. Soon would be a good time for that to begin. Who knows where more understanding and greater levels of cooperation might take us?

Like it or not, we’re all in this together. Might not be a bad idea for us to keep that in mind more often than seems the case….We’ve still got a future to deal with, after all. Facts should find their way into discussions more often than they do. A bit less animosity might also be a welcome change. Just saying….

The primary consequences of casting votes for this dangerous fraud, or the silent acquiescence to Trump’s farcical policy proposals which will never make it past his podium, are that all of us are then bound by the misguided results. We’ll also suffer the losses from what’s been neglected. More hardships affecting more of us and in more significant ways are unavoidable. That’s the “so much winning” voters have been promised?

We don’t get a voting do-over. Better to understand all of this by November 7th rather than on November 9th.

Then, it will be too late to slow down the imminent, out-of-control political, economic, and cultural train wreck bearing down on us—driven by Trump’s hideous lies, eight years of GOP’s pointless obstruction, and a Fox News-created alternate reality….The ultimate ride from [and to] Hell.

The More Information Hypothesis offered at the beginning of this series may be wrong or even backwards. But if what happens the day after voting and the days and weeks and months and years thereafter matters at all once the fear-based appeasements and assorted deceptions repeatedly offered to the lowest of low-information voters have run their course, more information and enlightenment is precisely what’s needed.

As I state in the “About Me” section, I’m driven by an intense commitment to learn why those on the conservative side of the fence view so many matters of great importance to us all so differently than do those of us on the progressive side. Those contrasting behaviors, beliefs, and ideologies are contributing factors to the very problems we’re trying to solve—the ones we must solve if our own ambitions and our hopes for a peaceful and prosperous world we leave to our children are to be well-served.

If we don’t recognize and accept that bitter partisanship is not always the wisest or most beneficial strategy, the goal of a better future will forever be as far away tomorrow as it is today.

The late Senator Paul Wellstone’s observation continues to hold far more truth and power than we give it credit:

We all do better when we all do better

Why make setting up inevitable and enduring conflict the primary objective of policy and planning?
